Lab Research Focus

Professor Huang's research integrates Neuropharmacology with Drug Discovery. By combining peptide synthesis, small molecule screening, and electrophysiology, his lab aims to develop novel treatments for neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Key research areas include:

1. Drug Design & Synthesis:
◾ Peptides: Designing and synthesizing novel analogs of Oxytocin and Endomorphins to improve stability, efficacy, and blood-brain barrier penetration.
◾ Small Molecules: Investigating the therapeutic potential of Arecoline and Arecaidine (betel nut alkaloids) and their derivatives for neuroprotection and cognitive enhancement.

2. Hippocampal Synaptic Plasticity & Memory:
◾ Utilizing brain slice recordings to investigate how these novel compounds regulate Long-Term Potentiation (LTP) and Long-Term Depression (LTD) in the hippocampus, elucidating the mechanisms of learning and memory.

3. Addiction & Reward Systems:
◾ Studying the neural mechanisms of addiction to Nicotine, Alcohol, and Arecoline.
◾ Exploring novel therapeutic targets to attenuate craving and withdrawal symptoms.

4. Migraine & Pain Mechanisms:
◾ Investigating the analgesic effects of oxytocin and novel peptides in attenuating Hyperalgesia (increased sensitivity) and Allodynia (pain from non-painful stimuli).
◾ Using isolated spinal cord preparations to explore the spinal pathways underlying chronic pain and migraine.

5. Behavioral Neuropharmacology:
◾ Autism (ASD): Examining the role of oxytocin in rescuing social deficits and repetitive behaviors.
◾ Sexual Behavior: Exploring the physiological regulation of sexual behavior and its interaction with the oxytocinergic system.
