The National Defense Medical Center was formerly known as the Military Medical School and the Army Health Service Training Institute. It is devoted to cultivate and train the military medical personnel.
The history of this department is traced back to 10 years before the Republic of China (the 28th year of Guangxu Emperor of Qing Dynasty, in 1902). At that time, it was the predecessor, Beiyang Military Medical School.
The Military Medical School and the Army Health Service Training Institute were merged to be The National Defense Medical Center at Jiangwan, Shanghai in June of the 36th year of the Republic of China (1947). The medical center system was adopted. The education implementation was called "eight categories and six levels". The eight categories are medicine, dentistry, pharmacology, nursing, public health engineering, public health equipment, public health inspection, and public health administration. The six levels are divided by the level of the education, such as the advanced study on the special subject, university education, college education, senior vocational education, medical technology training, and activity training (sergeant, military service training).
At present, in this organization, there are president, administration vice president and academics vice president. However, the chairman of the school of medicine, is as well as the dean of the teaching hospital. The school of the medicine contains 21 departments, such as internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics, radiology, and emergency medicine.
The school of Medicine has always upheld an excellent school spirit to train outstanding medical talents to serve at the medical teams in Taiwan or world-wild. The educational goal and purpose is to cultivate military doctors with profound medical knowledge, exquisite medical skills, high moral character and good medical ethics, to serve the army and the society, as well as to engage in advanced medical research.
